Visual Arts Room Renovation: A Community-Inspired Transformation
Continuing the story we began in last month’s post, highlighting the ARTS Center transformation, we’re excited to share more specifically how the Visual Arts Room is evolving as a centerpiece of this renewal. As one of the most vibrant and versatile spaces in the building, the Visual Arts Room reflects ARTS’ core values: creativity, collaboration, and community. Our recent listening sessions, which brought together voices from every corner of our community, were a powerful example of these principles in action:
Internal session with our team, led by our People and Culture Coordinator, Monica Bañuelos. This was an important opportunity for our team to speak openly about their visions for the space and areas of improvement they have noticed.
Internal session with youth in our programs, the primary beneficiaries of the Visual Arts Room, brought forth a strong call for comfort and inspiration. Many youth spoke about wanting a space that not only supports their artistic expression but also feels welcoming, flexible, and uniquely theirs.
External session with partners and organizations who have used the space, as we plan to make the space even more friendly for outside rentals and performances.
Participants reflected on what currently works in the room and shared imaginative ideas for making it even more inviting and functional. Echoing the overall transformation, their feedback revealed a unified vision: a space that is accessible, adaptable, and inspiring creativity for all.
As we compiled feedback, recurring themes emerged, many mirroring the broader renovation journey at the ARTS Center. Upgrading audio/visual (A/V) equipment and improving lighting were named as top priorities, building on similar enhancements throughout the building. We’re now exploring the best solutions to ensure the Visual Arts Room can host everything from hands-on workshops to inspiring performances.
With the community’s input guiding every step, we’re developing a renovation proposal that will bring these priorities to life, just as we have in other spaces throughout the Center. Our goal is to begin work this summer and unveil a revitalized Visual Arts Room, ready to welcome everyone for fall programming and beyond.
Thank you to everyone who has shared their vision with us. Your ideas are helping shape the next chapter of the ARTS Center—one that will continue to serve, inspire, and unite our community for years to come.
