ARTS Center Transformation: Breathing New Life into a Community Hub

The ARTS Center proudly stands as a testament to the power of creativity, community, and collaboration in National City, and we are excited to share updates and renovations to the building, which began last fall and will continue throughout the year.

Since its construction in the 1950s, this building has played a vital role in National City’s downtown neighborhood, first as the National City Public Library and, since 2011, as the home of A Reason to Survive (ARTS). The building’s rich legacy of providing a space for families to connect, learn, and explore sets the stage for its next chapter as our organization continues to grow and reach even more families in National City. Located beside the vibrant and expansive Kimball Park and the MLK Jr Community Center, the location is perfectly situated for community gatherings, events, and collaborations with partners from across the region. We regularly host events in our space, inviting our community and neighbors, and partnering with other organizations to explore everything National City has to offer!

A Deep Partnership with the City

ARTS and the City of National City work closely together, sharing common goals and appreciation for this historic space. We partner with city leaders on projects that help build connections and encourage creativity throughout the city. Each year, thousands of local youth and families find a welcoming home at the Center and in our programs, where they can express themselves and grow together.

The Renovation Journey

The ARTS Center is in the midst of a transformation, with input from the people who use and care about this space most. We started by cleaning and preparing the building, then replaced the flooring and painted the walls in the atrium, gallery, and visual arts room. These updates give us a fresh start for more renovations and help make the Center welcoming and safe for everyone.

A key part of the renovation has been inviting feedback from those who use the space most, the youth in our programs, our team, families, and community partners. Together, a vision is emerging for a key feature of the ARTS Center, which we currently call the Visual Arts Room, a flexible, large and inviting space designed to support both visual and performing arts. This co-creation ensures that the Center remains responsive to the community’s evolving needs.

Events at ARTS

To keep up with the growth of our space and our programs, our Events team has been growing in exciting ways as well! Over the past year, we have created a system that makes it easy for us to host partners, organizations, and community members for a wide range of art and community events. In addition to hosting regional conferences, Youth Arts Festivals, and our annual Día de los Muertos event, we also rent out our space for birthday parties, baby showers, and other special family and community moments. Led by Jose Contreras Jr, our Operations Manager, the Events team has increased both the number and quality of events, setting a new standard for hospitality and teamwork.

As Jose Contreras Jr shares, "It is so rewarding to see how events at ARTS have grown in such a short time. Over the last year in particular, we have created a sustainable system that allows us to host partners, organizations, and community members for their art and community events. As we continue to refine our approach to events, I am excited to expand our network of arts & culture and community organizations, specifically those in the South Bay, and to ensure that any guest that enters our space feels welcome and has a memorable experience."

At our External Listening Session earlier this month, our events team was recognized by Rita de la Fuente, who hosted a networking and workshop event at the ARTS Center last year with the Latina Giving Circle. She said that, above all the reasons to host an event at ARTS, the hospitality and warmth from our team stood out the most. With this renewed focus, every guest who visits the ARTS Center is welcomed with care, making sure their experience is memorable. As we grow, we look forward to building even stronger connections with arts, culture, and community organizations, especially in the South Bay region.

Green Spaces and Sustainability

The ARTS Center’s transformation also includes changes outside. Thanks to a partnership with the San Diego County Water Authority and the city, the grounds will soon have water-wise landscaping. Grant funding will help us replace grass with California-friendly plants, winding paths, educational signs, and features that collect rainwater. These updates will make the area more beautiful and encourage residents and businesses to choose sustainable, pollinator-friendly landscaping.

Community at the Heart

Volunteers, local businesses, and youth participants all contribute to the ongoing evolution of the ARTS Center. Projects like the Volunteer Patio Refresh, which is a collaboration with employees from the National City US Bank branch and led by our Volunteer and Intern Coordinator, Stephanie Rivas, demonstrate the power of community collaboration. Additionally, the updated Team Wall in the Atrium is a special ARTS @ Work commission project completed by paid youth interns in collaboration with mentors from Artist and Exile Inc. This new addition brightens and enhances our Atrium, creating a revitalized space to showcase our team and community announcements.

A Collective Effort

The ARTS Center’s transformation is possible thanks to generous supporters like the Prebys Foundation’s “Arts Ecosystem: Venues & Spaces” initiative and the San Diego County Neighborhood Reinvestment Grant. Their support helps the Center remain a creative, inclusive, and inspiring hub for generations to come.

The ARTS Center’s transformation is more than just a renovation. It’s a renewal of purpose, community, and creative spirit in the heart of National City.
