ARTS

Music and performance has a special place at ARTS.

The Danny Riley Music Program is home to programs and partnerships that come to life at the ARTS Center. Young Artists in Harmony — a collaboration between Art of Elan and ARTS — matches young composers with professional musicians to mentor and eventually perform their compositions in concerts around San Diego.

We've partnered with SDSU to offer instrumentation classes in guitar, violin, cello, and other stringed instruments.

Keep an eye on this space, we are planning to amplify our music programming even more in the near future.

Young Artists In Harmony

Young Artists in Harmony (YAH) is a unique music composition program offered in partnership with A Reason To Survive (ARTS) in National City, where advanced music students have the opportunity to explore musical composition with professional musicians (the Fall 2022 cohort features writing for piano, violin and cello), create and be part of a public performance at ARTS which will also be professionally recorded, meet and collaborate with other like-minded music students of high school and college age, and build a musical composition portfolio for college. Participants in YAH receive mentoring from professional Art of Elan musicians and meet weekly with professional musicians from Art of Elan to help coach and give feedback on student works. In addition, small weekly assignments and individual sessions for each student will supplement Saturday workshops.

The Young Artists in Harmony program is generously supported by the Clare Rose Foundation, The Conrad Prebys Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

DANNY RILEY

MUSIC PROGRAM

The Danny Riley Music Program honors the life of a young man who thrived in creative arts programs offered at A Reason To Survive (ARTS). Danny’s musicality of spirit, passion for music, and desire to grow personally through the arts exemplifies the best of creative youth development and ARTS’ mission. Your contribution commemorates Danny’s legacy and also serves as an investment in the creative futures of more young musicians.

Jason Mraz

Music Studio

In 2020, when the pandemic halted in-person programming and operations, our team spent time considering the future for spaces and programming at the ARTS Center. A unique opportunity that emerged was to work with Jason Mraz Foundation and Good Tidings Foundation on a renovation of the music room. A beautiful design for the music room and new recording studio led to construction and a makeover of the space that summer.

While we proceeded with caution in the months that followed — with new waves of Covid ebbing and flowing — we were able to resume "Young Artist in Harmony" programming with our partners, Art of Elan, in Spring 2021. That programming, and other small events, continued through 2021-22. Looking ahead, we're excited for the possibilities to partner, program, and perform in the Jason Mraz Music Studio.
