Very Superstitious

Christopher Tucker

Did you know that cameras can steal your soul? They can also take pictures of ghosts, and prove that your long lost loved ones are still around. For as long as cameras have existed, they have been used to both document and subvert our understanding of the world around us. In our workshop, we will lead a group of unsuspecting community members into a very suspicious photo shoot. On the surface, our photo series will highlight important scientists with their 3d printed and laser cut objects of Enlightenment learning, but be careful not to look too closely, or you may find something spooky in the background!

Patched Together

Claudia “Sew Loka” Rodriguez-Biezunski

Collaborative Sound Map

Pablo Dodero

Participants will use materials provided to add a depiction of a sound they hear at Kimball Park or from their memories in National City to a primed canvas laid out on a table outside of the ARTS building. Students will prompt participants on what are examples of sounds and ways to depict them. The final collaborative map will be displayed at the Youth Arts Festival.

Community ARTS - Spring 2024

Community ARTS is an in-house program designed for youth between the ages of 12 to 18 living in the South Bay who are interested in creating art to build stronger communities. Students split up into different classes or “project teams,” and have the opportunity to earn up to 50 hours of community service.

Light & SHadow

This Spring, participants will examine the theme of “Light and Shadow” as they delve into either visual, media, textile, or performing arts based on the team they chose to join. Led by professional teaching artists, youth create artwork that is exhibited in a final culminating event entitled, “Youth Arts Festival”. Along the way, they will develop meaningful friendships, cultivate new skills, and openly engage with their communities through art workshops, field trips, and guest speaker visits.
