Honoring Our Roots, Cultivating Our Future

The evening was filled with beautiful and inspiring moments honoring the seeds of our past and highlighting the impact of the work we are still doing today.

Thank you to our wonderful youth MC, Izabella, who guided us through the night with enthusiasm and charm!

Izabella has been a Community ARTS youth participant for over a year and is currently a junior at High Tech High. As our Bright Lights Youth Intern, she was integral to helping us produce our Bright Lights event! Other than hosting and helping us produce the programming for the evening, her other big role was working with Teaching Artist Kelsey Kenny to lead our Community Collaborative in creating the beautiful paper flowers and other decor you saw throughout the night!

To begin the evening we unveiled a beautifully reimagined portrait of Pat D’Arrigo, the inspiration for ARTS and mother of founder Matt D’Arrigo. This new work was created by Teaching Artist Rob Tobin, who has been with us since the beginning in 2001, and ARTS Alum and Teaching Artist Kelsey Kenney who’s been with ARTS since 2010 at the age of 14.

As a teenager in 1992, Matt found solace in painting and music during his mother and sister's battles with cancer. The arts became his refuge, providing him with "a reason to survive" during those emotional and difficult times and inspiring him to conceive of A Reason To Survive (ARTS). Wanting to cultivate the same transformative arts experiences for other young people, Matt founded ARTS In 2001 on the philosophy that arts can heal, uplift, and transform lives. Over the last 24 years, ARTS has evolved into the impactful organization it is today, uplifting over 1500 young people per year in the South County region of San Diego through the transformative power of creativity.  Read the full history here

Spring 2025
Spotlight Honorees

Every spring, our team proudly selects six   Bright Lights  from our youth, artists, and community partners, shining a spotlight on those who inspire meaningful change in our community.

Throughout the evening we enjoyed music from DJ Fronterizo Pop, who has performed with us for several ARTS events and always provides an eclectic and fun atmosphere!

To begin our honors ceremony, San Diego Poet Laureate and friend of ARTS, Paola Capó-García recited an inspiring poem connected to our spring theme, In Bloom.
